Apple has named John Ternus, a longtime insider who has been groomed as a top executive over hardware projects for years, as its new chief executive, succeeding Tim Cook.

Ternus is currently Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering. His appointment will take effect Sept. 1, the tech giant said Monday. Cook will become executive chairman.
