Apple stock was coming close to another milestone Wednesday.

Shares of the iPhone maker rose to as high as $343.67 on Wednesday, giving the company a market capitalization of more than $5 trillion. Apple stock then pared those gains, trading down 0.1% to $339.64.

If Apple stock ends the trading session with a market value above $5 trillion, it will be the first time in the company's history that it has done so, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Apple will need to close on Wednesday with a price of $340.43 or more to notch the milestone.

At last check Wednesday, Apple had a market value of $4.988 trillion. The stock briefly traded above the $5 trillion market value level on Tuesday before retreating, and on Monday it again surpassed Nvidia to become the world's most valuable company by market cap. Nvidia stock declined 2% to $192.95 on Wednesday, placing its current market value at $4.67 trillion.

Apple has only ever crossed the $5 trillion market cap level on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The iPhone maker reports fiscal third-quarter earnings after the closing bell Thursday.
