Democrats' nominee for Senate in Texas-a longtime Republican state-has been a top target for Republicans during the convention, and there are signs that their focus is justified. On Thursday, the AARP came out with a poll of the Texas Senate race that found James Talarico was leading state Attorney General Ken Paxton by 4 percentage points. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.3 percent.

The poll was conducted by a bipartisan team that included Republican firm Fabrizio Ward. Tony Fabrizio has been President Trump's pollster but also did work for Paxton's rival in the primary, Sen. John Cornyn.

Paxton, who has been plagued by scandals, spoke on Wednesday night of the convention. He warned that losing Texas-which nonpartisan analysts consider a tossup-would "lose the commonsense revolution. If we lose the commonsense revolution, we lose America."
